What is Sorare?

Sorare is a platform where players collect, use and trade collectible soccer player cards, minted as NFT’s. The cards come in four separate rarities and can be used to participate in biweekly fantasy soccer-style tournaments. In these tournaments, players can earn rewards in the form of rarer and better cards, as well as Ethereum. The platform uses a unique scoring system to assign a score between 0 and 100 to each of the 5 players the player has selected for a specific tournament.

While NFT’s are all the rage and every NFT-related platform is experiencing massive user growth and expansion, Sorare is no different. The number of new users and transactions on Sorare has increased dramatically these past few weeks (and even days), however it is insane to think about the room for growth the platform has. The number of players on the platform is still extremely low in comparison with the number of people who play fantasy sports, and if you were to compare the number of Sorare users to the number of soccer fans around the world, you can see the true potential the game has.

In February, the Sorare team has raised 50 million $ in funding in order to assist with the development of the platform and community, obtain additional club licenses, expand their team and launch a mobile app. They have also recently partnered with Ubisoft to create a game called One Shot League, which uses Sorare player cards and the scoring system. All in all, the platform is expanding at a rapid pace, however the room for growth is still massive.

Data overview:

Number of Sorare players that own at least a rare card (as of 8.3.2021):

8,500

Number of fantasy sports players around the world:

Over 100 million

Number of soccer fans around the world:

2.5–4 billion (depending on which report you go by, in any case, the number is staggering)

Getting started and gameplay:

While it is possible to start playing and earning rewards without an investment, it is highly unlikely. You would have to get very lucky with the starting common player packs, in order to beat several thousand other players in the rookie tournaments (you can participate in rookie tournaments for the first 8 game weeks) and win some rare cards.

In reality, you would most likely need to invest in order to get started and get your hands on your first rare cards. With the recent influx of new players, the barrier for entry has risen quite significantly as well. While the team is working on solutions to address this and lower the barrier of entry, you would currently have to invest about 0.2 or 0.3 ETH to buy your first 5 rare players. However, if you join the game using a referral link, you will receive a free rare player card when you purchase your first five players from the ‘New Signings’ tab. In a lot of cases, especially due to the recent rise in prices, this free rare card will be worth enough to cover your initial investment. In some cases, if you get really lucky, you could get a card worth several ETH and multiply your investment on your first day.

At this point, you should have enough rare cards to enter the Global All Star tournament and score at least 205 points. This is the minimum threshold for qualifying for the minimal reward, 0.01 ETH. If your players score 250 points during a given game week, you receive 0.02 ETH, and if your players score even higher and you place among the best players, the rewards range from rare player cards to rare cards plus Ethereum.

Since it is not very difficult to assemble a team that can score at least 205 points every game week, and since there are two game weeks per week, a very basic team could potentially earn you 0.02 to 0.04 ETH every week with minimal effort. However, if you choose to reinvest these rewards and any potential rewards from other tournaments to improve your team, the rewards get exponentially larger as the level of your team improves.

One of the biggest boosts you can give your team in the beginning is to simply sign up using a referral link, because that free rare player can end up financing most of your starting squad. My referral link is attached below, however if you wish to use another link, you can easily find one on YouTube, Google or the Sorare subreddit. Just make sure to use one!

Of course, the scope of the game is so much larger than what can be described in a short article. From the fantasy aspect to the live card trading market, different regional and special tournaments, the collectible value and so much more. And if you are a football fan, the game itself is very fun to play, given its depth and different aspects.

With the potential for growth and expansion that Sorare has, it is not difficult to envision it as THE platform for fantasy soccer and collectible soccer cards in the future. The good news is that you are still very early and have the opportunity to join and start playing before the game becomes mainstream.

Enjoy Sorare and have fun playing!
